University City (UCity) is situated directly across from the Schuylkill River. Easily accessible to Center City by foot, car, or SEPTA, this area isn’t just for the collegiate crowd. With many eclectic neighborhoods, great restaurants, coffee and specialty shops, and much-adored Clark Park and it’s uber popular farmer’s market, University City is home to Penn, Drexel, and University of the Sciences, as well as the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). Characteristics shared by its many desirable neighborhoods are lots of lush greenery, generally larger housing stock (singles, twins, townhomes, condos), and more gracious backyards–all with a cool city vibe. Also home to the desirable Penn Alexander School Catchment. University City's arts and cultural scene is one of the most dynamic and varied in the region. This locale is home to world-class museums and galleries, festivals, performance spaces of all sizes and much more. Another must-see is Cira Green, a vibrant one acre park in the sky where the view is draw-dropping (30th Street between Walnut and Chestnut Streets.) In 2017, Schuylkill Yards officially broke ground, starting with the public park, Drexel Square. It’s a $3.5 billion mega-development is actually a 15-20 year plan that will again redefine UCity as the hub for innovation, culture, science and community stewardship. Many commuters (who work in New York City, for example) love this neighborhood due to its proximity to 30th Street Station. Not to be missed: World Café Live, The Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts and Metropolitan Bakery.
Our own Jeff “City” Block lived in the Garden Court neighborhood of University City for many years. Stay in-the-know about this neighborhood here.
