The Graduate neighborhood (also known as Southwest Center City), is named after yesteryear’s Graduate Hospital. The neighborhood is bounded by South Street to the north, Washington Avenue to the south, Broad Street to the east, and the Schuylkill River to the west. Graduate’s immense popularity is due in part to it being directly adjacent to the Rittenhouse neighborhood, the Center City office district, and University City and its hospitals and universities. Graduate boasts quiet residential streets with a mix of 19th and 20th-century townhomes (originally built for the working class of Philadelphia’s Industrial Age), interspersed with striking new construction. This locale offers a close-knit, residential community that is walkable to nearly everywhere. South Street west of Broad has become a restaurant row of sorts over the past decade or so. Every fall, the restaurants and brewpubs on the street join with local craft brewers to stage Bloktoberfest, a free all-ages block party. Beer proceeds from the event are donated to neighborhood initiatives like education, green space and public safety. How cool is that?
