Rough times. The Eagles have lost two straight and are no longer a lock to win the NFC East. And much more importantly, the NFL is dealing with the tragedy that occurred when Buffalo Bills Safety Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest after making a tackle in Monday night’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Emergency personnel sprang into action to save Hamlin’s life and the game did not resume.
Encouragingly, as of Thursday afternoon, the Bills released an update that stated: “Per the physicians caring for Damar Hamlin at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, Damar has shown remarkable improvement over the past 24 hours. While still critically ill, he has demonstrated that he appears to be neurologically intact. His lungs continue to heal, and he is making steady progress. We are grateful for the love and support we have received.” According to a cardiologist who spoke with ESPN, “The phrase ‘neurologically intact’ refers to a person who is ‘moving their extremities with some form of purpose, and if they’re able to understand basic commands.’”
This is great news, and it is also wonderful to see the outpouring of support for Damar throughout the country. President Biden spoke to his parents and millions were donated to his charity that raises money to gift underprivileged kids with toys. His family said, “we want to express our sincere gratitude for the love and support shown to Damar during this challenging time. We are deeply moved by the prayers, kind words, and donations from fans around the country.”
Let’s be honest, very few people even heard of Damar Hamlin before this event, including most NFL fans. I follow and deeply understand the Eagles as much as anyone, but do I know every defensive back throughout the league, especially in the AFC? Absolutely not. Nevertheless, Americans showed kindness and concern and came together without the blaming and division that we sadly see so often throughout the constant news cycle.
Damar’s father spoke to the Bills team last night, and they said that was needed as the team returns to practice today. My thoughts are with Damar and his family through this difficult time, and I pray that he makes a full recovery and can go on to live a long and healthy life.
Now regarding the Eagles. They were dominating the division and league at 13-1 and only had to win one of their final three games to lock up the top seed in the NFC. Then QB Jalen Hurts got himself hurts (oy vey, I know that one was bad) and they lost two straight. Now they have to win this week to guarantee that all-important No. 1 seed. In the NFL, only the top seed in each conference receives a bye for the first week of the playoffs, so they can rest, practice, and wait for their eventual opponent. Therefore, this is a really big game for the Eagles. And it will be especially negative if they lose three straight and have to play in the Wild Card round next weekend.
First, the Eagles need to refocus following such an emotional week. Second, they need to get healthy, and that starts with Hurts. Hurts is not 100%, but he has practiced some with the first team this week and he will be out there if he can play and help the team. That remains to be seen, but at this point, I think it is more likely than not that MVP candidate Jalen Hurts will be on the field when the Eagles face the NY Giants.
Speaking of the Giants, in perhaps the biggest surprise of 2022, they had a great year and made the playoffs. Hats off to Big Blue. And they are already locked into their playoff seed, so this game is meaningless to them. Win or lose, the Giants will be the 6th seed in the NFC. So, do they even play their starters or rest them for the Wild Card game the following week? Maybe they play them for a few series? Who knows. I mean I am sure the G-Men would love to knock the Birds off their perch, but they would then be delivering the Division to the Cowboys, which is no great shakes. (Yes, both Giants and Eagles backers have a similar, strong disdain for the Cowboys.)
So that leads me to this Sunday’s game at Lincoln Financial Field. 4:25 pm start. Eagles win and they are in the NFC East No. 1 Seed with the bye and home field throughout. And I have two tickets available in the Lower Bowl (Sec 125), which I am offering to the 17th person who replies with “E-A-G-L-E-S, Eagles. Let’s Go Birds!!” (Feel free to cut and paste it, of course).*
Why did I choose 17, by the way? Because it will take 17 victories for the Birds to become Super Bowl Champions. Our 14 in the regular season, our two home playoff games, and the Super Bowl in Arizona on February 12th! (Even if we lose this weekend, it will still take 17 to win the Super Bowl—13 in the regular season and then an extra playoff win because we won’t have the aforementioned bye.)
And while Giants fans are eligible for these tickets, they must respond with “E-A-G-L-E-S, Eagles. Let’s Go Birds!!” just like everybody else. Though feel free to add in anything else you like. Perhaps mention that in the last 10 years, the Giants have won 4 and lost 15 against the Eagles.
But what I really recommend is that Eagles and Giants fans alike enjoy this three-minute clip regarding the original Miracle at the Meadowlands (aka “The Fumble”). If you are familiar with this infamous play, you should watch this clip. And if you are not familiar, then you should really watch it. 1978, and I was 11 years old. Somehow, I remember watching this play at a hotel in Scottsdale, Arizona. Yes, that is totally random. I guess my parents went there for Thanksgiving break or something. Did I watch it live or see the highlights? I have no idea. I just clearly remember sitting in that hotel room over 40 years ago and watching that play.
