September 11, 2001. A day that changed our nation and the world. So many people died. So many heroes stepped up.
|
20 years later, and I remember the moment I first heard that a plane crashed into the World Trade Center. That was all I knew at first. A plane hit one of the Twin Towers. I had just started my real estate career 6 weeks prior, and I was walking into our Tuesday morning office meeting. My good friend Patty Hogan was outside the meeting room on the phone as I approached, really upset. She quickly told me about the crash as I walked into the meeting. Needless to say, no one was talking about real estate. Even so, at that exact moment, everyone assumed a small plane had accidentally flown too low and crashed. That had happened before and it has happened since (such as the accidental crash of ex-Phillies pitcher Cory Lidle’s four-seat plane into a Manhattan condominium building on 10/11/2006).
At that moment, 9/11/2001, between 8:46 am when the first plane hit the North Tower and 9:03 am, we had very little information. That changed in an instant at 9:03 am when the second plane hit the South Tower. At that exact moment, everyone knew it was a terrorist attack. And then at 9:31, President George W Bush announced that the crashes were an “apparent terrorist attack on our country.” And who knew that there would be more. Six minutes later the terrorists crashed a plane into the Pentagon. And then at 10:07 am, the heroes on hijacked United Airlines Flight 93 tried to retake their plane from the terrorists, forcing the plane to crash into a field near Shanksville, PA, preventing the plane from reaching its intended target (which is still unknown to this day).
At around this same time, both Twin Towers collapsed within 30 minutes of each other, and those of us who are old enough will never forget the scenes of that day and its aftermath.
The hijackers murdered 2,977 people that day and over 6,000 more were injured. In addition, more victims later died of cancer and other diseases as a result of toxin exposure at or around Ground Zero. You can read more about the lingering health effects of 9/11 first responders here and here.
This ATB is in memory of those that were murdered that day, which includes:
-
2,184 civilians at or around the World Trade Center Complex
-
344 NYFD firefighters
-
72 law enforcement officers (including 60 NYPD and Port Authority officers)
-
8 civilian paramedics
-
125 people working at the Pentagon (both civilians and military personnel)
-
76 passengers and 11 crew members of American Airlines Flight 11 out of Boston
-
51 passengers and 9 crew members aboard United Airlines Flight 175 out of Boston
-
53 passengers and 6 crew members aboard American Airlines Flight 77 out of Washington Dulles
-
33 passengers and 7 crew members who helped bring down United Airlines Flight 93 in an uninhabited field in southwestern Pennsylvania
For me, this remembrance of the 20th anniversary of September 11, 2001, is made even more meaningful as it falls during the Days of Awe that separate Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. For all of those who were killed that day, may their memory be a blessing, and my thoughts will always be with those who lost family, friends, and loved ones.
I wish you a peaceful weekend.
