In what is becoming a Labor Day tradition for the ATB, I will make some adjustments to last year’s Labor Day newsletter and go with that. Let’s do it.
A Few Thoughts on Labor Day Weekend
Labor Day weekend is always a huge travel weekend. Along with major airport traffic, it is one of the worst times to hit the road. And while I try to avoid travelling Labor Day weekend, I guess many people love it (or at least feel like they have to do it)--thus the packed roads.
I have always relished the more relaxed and uncrowded Philly streets over the holiday weekend.
Anyway, I just read the newsletters I wrote the last two years on Labor Day, and I realized that both the general sentiment and what my family is doing this weekend generally remain the same. So, with a few specific adjustments for LD 2025, here are my holiday weekend thoughts:
Labor Day is generally considered the unofficial end of summer. A weekend that transitions from the busy summer months to what may just be the busiest month of the year. Back to school, back to work, Jewish holidays for those who celebrate, and just a total getting into gear, period. Rarely do you hear someone say, “Oh, September, a month where I just loll around.” So, a three-day weekend is a nice line of demarcation. And while it seems like more schools are starting before Labor Day these days (like Philly public schools started doing in 2024), I guess the long weekend works with that as well.
This weekend, my family will be chilling and helping the kids get ready for a new school year, starting the 10th and 5th grades. Going through the seemingly hundreds (thousands?!?!) of emails we receive from the boys’ two schools and making sure we didn’t miss anything. Are all forms in? Schedules tightened up? Last-minute clothes or supplies? Are all summer assignments finished? Maybe a little last-minute cramming is in order (like father, like sons, apparently). Hey, “often the last minute is the best minute” (I may have made that quote up in 2023!!!).
On Saturday, we are attending a garden wedding. I am really looking forward to it. In Bucks County, which is cool. Beautiful, late summer day and not too far away. Check and check! Great people. Relaxing day for the family. Then on Sunday, we are getting together with our Delco friends like we do every year for major holidays (Memorial Day, Labor Day, Easter, etc.). I hope to have some time for reading and maybe a Monday family hike in the woods. A little bit of work mixed in (as always). I enjoy work, so that is ok. Overall, just a chill weekend (though it also sounds sort of busy, right?)
And lest we forget the meaning behind Labor Day, I wrote about that a couple of years ago, which you can read here.
Finally, I am also looking forward to the (unofficial) start of fall. Back to school with more set schedules. Red October baseball and, hopefully, November as well. The Eagles opening up against what seems to be a really sad Cowboys team (LOL!). Amazing fall weather. The beautiful trees. I love the change of seasons and am grateful that Philly offers a clear vision of all four.
I hope you have a great weekend, whatever you have planned.
Warm regards,
Jeff
