Safer Now Than In 1900!

Hi Readers,


I wish everyone a fun, relaxing, and enjoyable Independence Day weekend.


And to kick it off, here is a July 4th-related article from Smithsonian Mag titled “The 1900s Movement to Make the Fourth of July Boring (but Safe).” I love history, and I especially enjoyed this article because it proves once and for all that dangerous celebrations in Philly did not start with greased pole climbing. Moreover, every kid has been admonished to be careful with fireworks lest you blow off your fingers. Well, read this article, because apparently that is absolutely true—especially in the early 1900s. Finally, if you are an “originalist," perhaps you support dangerous July 4th celebrations. After all, John Adams did write in 1776 that “in addition to ‘Pomp and Parade,’ the Fourth should be celebrated with ‘Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations.’” Hmmm.


And here is an Independence Day “Victim” in 1910.
