First, while well overdue, I am honored that our nation now celebrates Juneteenth as a Federal Holiday.
Growing up and through most of my adulthood, I never even heard of Juneteenth or knew that there was a “Second Independence Day” celebration. It was not taught in schools when I was a kid, and I went to a very progressive school, Friends Select. FSS offered a meaningful and balanced education, which included many of the negative things that America did to our Indigenous peoples, Black people, and immigrants. But Juneteenth was never mentioned (and while there was a very good chance I would not have been paying attention if it was mentioned, I have asked some other classmates as well, and they confirmed my recollection). Over the decades, I’ve loved reading about current events, politics, and social issues, yet I had not heard about Juneteenth until recently. And I am so glad that I now have knowledge about this most meaningful event in our nation’s history.
This is a long-overdue recognition of our nation’s Second Independence Day. While our nation became independent from Great Britain in 1776, it was not until 1863 that all of our fellow Americans were freed from bondage (and 1865 before many of them even knew they were freed). And as we all know, the revulsion of outright racism continued for well over a century through Jim Crow and other horrors and still continues to this day. (I know that people disagree to what extent and in what form racism exists today, and there are so many nuances. Not looking to discuss that. Rather, I think we can all agree that Juneteenth is a special federal holiday and one that’s recognition is well overdue.)
I hope that moving forward, all American schoolchildren and all Americans come to understand the importance of June 19th. Learn more about it here.
Second, this weekend is Father’s Day. All I want to say here is that as important as my real estate business is and all of my clients are, nothing is more important to me than being a father to Ari & Ezra and a husband to Kristen. I love them so much, and I wish a Happy Father’s Day to all!
Enjoy the special weekend, everyone.
