Hi Readers,
I have known Monday’s eclipse was coming for quite some time. Many months ago, my wife told me that a total eclipse would traverse North America this spring and would be passing over her hometown of Conneaut, Ohio.
Conneaut, which is right on Lake Erie and the Pennsylvania border, is smack dab in the path of totality (just south of the exact center, which is over the lake). Kristen was not just telling me this because she knows I enjoy random and fascinating information. The awe of nature speaks to her, and she said she wanted to go. What a great idea. So tomorrow, she and our 8-year-old son Ezra leave for northeastern Ohio for a once-in-a-generation experience. The next total solar eclipse that will be visible from anywhere in the contiguous United States will be in 2044.
Ezra is missing school of course, and many Philly schools are closing early or late so their students can watch this event. Because even in Philly, which is about 200 miles south of the path of totality, the eclipse is a big deal. And with good reason. Because it is awesome in the truest sense of the word–to inspire awe. I actually use the word awesome a lot. Awesome condo. Awesome cheesesteak. “That jawn is awesome.” And I truly mean it, but more in the colloquial sense, to wit, “very impressive.” This 2024 eclipse will be awesome for real.
Now it may seem odd when you have to say, “Oh, here comes the most awesome thing you will ever see, but just be sure you don’t look at it.” Right? Or at least directly at it. And definitely not without the special glasses or other approved eye protection. And that is a pretty big deal because, for most people, possible permanent eye damage is, in fact, a big deal. And this also applies to Philly’s “deep partial” solar eclipse, where the moon will still block 9/10th of the sun’s visibility. Don’t look directly at it.
For some great information on what will be happening this Monday in Philly, here is Visit Philly’s Full Guide to the Partial Eclipse in Philly. A few key pieces of information to know—
- In Philly, “the moon will begin its path across the sun on Monday, April 8, 2024, at 2:08 p.m. and will move from south to west for nearly two-and-a-half hours, until 4:35 p.m.
- The mid-eclipse time — when the highest coverage will occur — will be at 3:23:42 p.m.”
- Wear your safety glasses if you have them, and if not, do not look directly at the moon-covered sun.
By the way, how often do we have an earthquake and eclipse just a few days apart?
Have a great weekend, and I hope you have the opportunity to take some time and enjoy the eclipse on Monday afternoon.
Warm regards,
Jeff
