Hey Readers,
Last night, the Eagles did it again—snagged a top half of the 1st round talent with a late pick in that round (in this case, the penultimate pick--31st out of 32). It worked out with Nolan Smith, Quinyon Mitchell, and with Cooper DeJean (who they actually stole in the 2nd round).
This year, the 31st Pick in the NFL draft was Alabama Linebacker (inside/edge) Jihaad Campbell. And what are the odds that Campbell was born in the Delaware Valley (Gloucester Township, NJ) and that he grew up a Birds fan! How old was little Jihaad when he first said, “GO BIRDS!!”
As per Zach Berman at allphly.com, Campbell’s favorite players growing up were LeSean McCoy, Darren Sproles, and Jeremy Maclin. The article went on to quote Campbell last night—
--“Come on, man — definitely!” Campbell said of his Eagles fanaticism.
--Campbell did not need any clues when he saw a 215 number on his phone.
--“Once I see the number I’m like, ‘Pretty interesting’,” he said.
--“You know who this is?” the caller asks.
--“Nah,” Campbell says.
--“It’s Howie Roseman,” the caller says.
--Campbell said he almost broke down when he heard that.
--“It was a surreal moment for me and my family,” he said. “My grandfather, way back to the Randall Cunningham days, he always watched the Eagles. He always loved the Eagles. My pops, my mom, my two brothers — my whole family.”
--There can sometimes be a risk in bringing a player back to his hometown. It can also provide more of an understanding of the environment and comes with a built-in infrastructure.
--“I rely on Dom (DiSandro) to get to know these kids, and he knows all these kids and the background that they come from,” Roseman said. “I don’t have any doubt about this player’s character, this player’s work ethic, or this player’s desire to win.”
In Big Dom we trust. GO Birds!!
Now onto Rounds 2 and 3 tonight. I love drafts. In fact, with the Flyers and Sixers both out of the playoffs, I am way more interested in the NHL and NBA lotteries and drafts than I am in the pro hockey and basketball postseasons. As a kid, I loved playing pretend GM, and perhaps I still do as an adult.
Have a great weekend.
Best regards,
Jeff
