Even in our big, crazy world with so much going on, oftentimes it is the little things that make a difference. Small, random acts of kindness. Here is a story personal to my family that really touched my heart.
This past Tuesday I was working until about 8:00 and my 11-year-old son Ari had dinner with a friend’s family after tennis practice. So, it was a day when my wife Kristen and my six-year-old Ezra made space for some quality time together. Kristen pulled out Ezra’s EzyRoller for the first time since last fall. Because he had grown so much, he now required the extension piece that comes with the model we have. When Kristen went to add the extender, she realized she needed several specific screws that we did not have. So, with the extender in hand, they went off to the hardware store to find the right screws!
Our local hardware store is Stanley’s True Value on Ridge Avenue by Walnut Lane in Roxborough. Five minutes from our Mt Airy home and a store that offers the best of all worlds. A huge, clean, bright supermarket-style store with tons of stuff, but also the local, really friendly, super helpful employees who take pride in their work and store.
Kristen and Ezra next met Willie, who was working the nuts/bolts/screws section. Willie was eager to help them find the right-sized screw. Typically, that would have taken him about a minute, the screws would cost about $2.50, and they would be done. But Willie took something so simple and ordinary and took the time to make it a special day that Ezra (and his mom) will cherish.
Willie started to examine the screws they had to determine what screws would match, when he noticed that Ezra seemed very interested in what he was doing, and he very graciously asked Ezra if he would like to help him find the right screw. He showed Ezra his thread gauge (to measure screw sizes) and took the time to explain to Ezra that some screws are measured using the metric system while others use the imperial system (e.g., inches). He then took more time to explain what the most common measurements are and once he identified the system and size, he showed Ezra where they kept the screws, showed him the different boxes with different types of screws (button-head vs flat head), and let Ezra find the correct screws. Then as Kristen sincerely thanked him for his help and time, the gentleman said, “I want to thank you, Ezra,” he reached into his pocket and handed Ezra three dollar bills. Willie then said, “This is to thank you for having been such a great helper.” Suffice to say, Ezra was over the moon! He was bursting with joy and happiness.
Of course, Ezra went home and rode his EzyRoller, but what he will remember about that day was his time at the hardware store. With an unexpected act of kindness, Willie made what is typically a mundane errand into a special day for a six-year-old boy.
So rather than talk about real estate sales, interest rates, and mask mandates, this week, I want to thank Willie and Stanley’s Hardware for being such great neighbors and contributing so much to making Philly the great city it is.
I hope you have an amazing weekend. Happy Easter and Happy Pesach to all.
