Last night we began the Jewish festival of lights, the story of a miracle. About 2,200 years ago, 168 BCE to be exact, the Syrian king Antiochus Epiphanes invaded Jerusalem and desecrated the Temple, which was the Jews’ holiest place. Epiphanes worshiped the Greek gods, and he forbade the Jews to practice their religion, including proscribing Shabbat and circumcision. He renamed the Temple to honor Zeus and gave the Jews two options — conversion or death.
Led by Judas Maccabee, the Jews overcame overwhelming odds and defeated the much stronger Syrian armies. Hanukkah means “dedication,” and it celebrates the rededication of the Temple following the ouster of the Syrian army. When the Maccabees entered the Temple, they found only a small jar of the oil that was needed to relight the ner tamid, which needed to burn constantly in the synagogue. The problem was that it would take their courier eight days to procure the replacement oil needed to keep the light burning. Miraculously, the small amount of oil lasted for the full eight days and eight nights until the oil refill arrived. The ner tamid stayed lit!
To celebrate Hanukkah today, Jews light the menorah each of the eight nights. They also eat fried foods (like potato latkes and jelly donuts) to celebrate the oil that lasted the entire eight days.
Over two millennia later, the people who populate this same area once again need a miracle. A miracle to bring peace to the region — security, understanding, and respect for both the Jewish State of Israel and the Palestinian people. This proposition looks bleak right now. Seemingly impossible. What we need is a miracle.
Chag Chanukah Sameach. Happy Hanukkah to all who celebrate!
Have a wonderful weekend.
Jeff
