Your Weekly Dose of Real Estate News, Open Houses, Listings and More — by Jeff “City” Block
|
I am back in Philly and ready to go for 2020! I am so excited. Even the first full week of January has been hopping. Are we heading for an early and dynamic Spring Market? Time will tell but so far, so good.
How did I get charged up for the work ahead? Enjoying an amazing vacation with my family. Kristen, Ari, Ezra, and I just spent a week in Puerto Rico. We had a great time exploring this beautiful island. A lot of excitement too. A few thoughts and highlights…
|
-
Nothing wrong with sunny and 85 every day. A few pleasant rain showers too, though the heaviest one soaked my backpack and totally ruined my iPad. Already have a brand-new one compliments of Apple Care. All good.
-
We started our trip in Guánica in the dry forests of the south coast. Amazing place. Just gorgeous geography. Really earth-shaking. And I mean that literally because we heavily felt several earthquakes while we were there. One while I was kayaking with Ari about ¾ miles out in the sea. And the epicenter was just off the coast of Guánica. It turned out these were foreshocks to the much bigger quakes that rocked the south coast right after we returned to Philly. Really scary and tragic and much of the island is still without power.
-
We also made it to the southwest tip of the island, Cabo Rojo.
-
Next we flew in a 9-seater Cessna 402 to Vieques. What a cool, laid back, and beautiful island. Wild horses and chickens roaming all over. 150 stunning beaches. Delicious whole red snapper. Rent a golf cart for the family to get around and have a blast. Vieques is the home to the world’s brightest bioluminescent bay. We kayaked out there on a dark night. The water is dark until there is movement from your hand or paddle or boat. Then it lights up like a lightbulb. It is incredible.

Puerto Rico is a U.S. treasure (no passport; no customs, no currency exchange). I highly recommend vacationing there. This is our fourth time and the second time with kids and we are just starting to explore. Last year, we visited the only rain forest in our entire National Park system. While there, you can enjoy horseback riding, hiking, snorkeling, historic sites, and just relaxing at the beach or pool.
By the way, the progress Puerto Rico has made in recovering from Hurricane Maria in the fall of 2017 is remarkable. The difference between 2018 and 2019 is significant.
I am far from a PR expert. We just love it. And we look forward to going back. And tourist dollars really help. My thoughts are with everyone there affected by the earthquake. We met some of the nicest people.
As much as I like any vacation, I am ALWAYS happy to get back to Philly. This is my favorite place in the world, after all. Let’s sell some real estate. Please contact me to discuss any of your real estate questions or needs. And if you have any friends or family with questions, please have them reach out as well. I am ready to go. #2020

The Philly Home Show is Back
This annual show is happening January 10-12 & 17-19 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center (1101 Arch Street). A lot of people like to walk this show because it could be viewed as a time-saver. It’s truly a one-stop-shop marketplace and especially helpful if you have multiple projects planned for inside and/or outside your home. You can talk to experts and also get special show pricing in some instances. Most of all, I think people just get inspired here and think about upcoming DIY spring projects. Don’t miss the “Make it, Take it” Workshops and “The Barking Lot + Doggie Fashion Show.” Save $3 off the price of your $13 ticket here.

New Nightlife in Fishtown Coming Soon
It’s called Fabrika (1108 Frankford Avenue) and it offers a new twist on food and entertainment. Think modern-day cabaret (featuring tasty Eastern Mediterranean-style selections) and a fun variety show-style line up of nightly acts. There’s nothing quite like it in Philly. This place is huge – 2 floors, 3 bars and a main stage, plus VIP primo seating on the Mezzanine level. They’ll be open from 10:00 p.m. – 2:00 a.m. Thursday through Saturday. See the full schedule here. BTW, I think this place will be a hit with some couples who might be looking for a hip and non-traditional wedding venue (holds up to 550 guests). Doors will swing open in about a month according to Philly Mag.

Bart’s Bagels Begins in West Philly
It’s finally open at 3945 Lancaster Avenue (7:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m Wed – Sun). Nothing wrong with bagels that are “handmade, kettle-boiled, slowly fermented, and baked on burlap boards in a revolving oven.” These beauties have an inviting dark crust and are chewy with seeds on both sides. I like the Pumpernickel Everything bagel. Or try the “The Rosenberg” – Nova, Whitefish Salad & Pickled Cucumbers. Expect awesome schmears, spreads, and inventive specialty sandwiches. Click here for a full menu and more info.

Sponsored by Community Acupuncture of Mt. Airy, with the support of Historic Germantown. Wednesday, 1/15/20 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm 6945 Germantown Avenue Click here for more information.
