Go Birds! Tax Appeals Sixers Arena |
| | | Hi Readers— Just a few short items today: 1. GO BIRDS!! Last week’s game out in the snow was so much fun. Now, the focus is solely on crushing the Commodores. The only Commodores I support include Lionel Richie.
2. On a totally separate note, the official deadline to appeal your 2025 Philly property taxes was October 7, 2024. However, if you were considering an appeal and missed that deadline, you could potentially have a second bite of the appeal apple. If you recently received a hard copy 2025 Tax Notice from the Office of Property Assessment in the mail, then you have 30 days from the date of that letter to appeal. Basically, the city sent these letters out late, thereby automaticlly extending the appeal period for anyone who just received one. If you think you may want to appeal and want more information, please see these recent ATB newsletters on this topic here and here or contact me directly to discuss.
3. Finally, in my September 20, 2024 newsletter, I opined that I would love to see the 76ers stay in South Philly. I wrote: |
| I love downtown development and appreciate the theoretical idea behind a Center City arena. But I am a lifelong Philadelphian and have been going to the sports complex for over 50 years. I have seen countless Phillies, Flyers, Sixers, and Eagles games there, as well as scores upon scores of concerts. The Vet, the Spectrum, JFK, the Linc, Citizens Bank, and, of course, the Wells Fargo Center (f/k/a the FU Center).
The Philly sports complex is awesome and is on its way up. Convenient to pretty much everywhere in the Delaware Valley, and so far as I know, Philly sports fans love attending games there. I know I do. While walking to 12th & Market would be convenient for me personally, I am not sure 76ers fans would feel so in general. In fact, I am pretty sure polls have shown the opposite. What do you think? Here is Jason Kelce’s opinion. I agree with Kelce on several points. One, the South Philly Sports Complex is just a great place to see a game. Two, not looking to hold the Sixers hostage as a Comcast Spectator tenant. The 76ers could build their own Sports Complex arena. Three, if the downtown stadium does get built, it will be fine, and we will get used to it. I think Chinatown will be fine with the Chinatown Stitch over 676 and the many millions of dollars that the city must extract from the Sixers to benefit Chinatown and the entire segment of Center City surrounding “76er Place.” I would prefer to see the Sixers stay in South Philly but between Center City and Camden… well, I agree with Kelce there as well.
|
| As it turned out, what a huge win for the City. Almost a perfect result. The Sixers stay at the Sports Complex. The Flyers and Sixers will team up on a world-class, state-of-the-art new arena. The potential to bring a WNBA franchise to the city increases exponentially. And Market East can be improved in a more practical manner. Also a win for the building trades and Chinatown. I think a huge win for Philly overall.
I hope everyone has an awesome weekend (i.e., the Eagles win).
GO BIRDS. Warm regards, Jeff |
